The city of Cambridge is widely known all over the globe for being home to the University of Cambridge, one of the finest in the world. The University consists of some thirty one colleges including; Downing College, Emmanuel College, Fitzwilliam College and Girton College which greatly effect the city. Although many folk arrive at Cambridge to visit the University, Cambridge has so many more places to visit besides the University. The city dates back to medieval times and therefore there there are numerous fine examples of breathtaking architecture. You may stroll through the medieval streets, enjoy one of the many parks or gardens or even go punting along the river. If you like the sound of a few hours punting, then one should rent a punt or alternatively one can take a chauffeured punt. You will discover numerous organisations offering this service along the river. Another idea is a small journey up and down the river in a narrow boat.
The city is also known for its churches, with thirteen of them situated within the city of Cambridge’s boundaries. Of the 13 churches located in Cambridge town centre it is All Saints Church which is one of the best examples of Gothic revival architecture in England. A further church which is a “must see” is Church of the Holy Sepulchre, one of only 4 Norman round churches found in England. The smallest of Cambridge’s churches is St Peter’s Church, which is hidden away in a peaceful part of the city centre. Probably the most breathtaking panoramic views of the city of Cambridge and University colleges are to be witnessed from the viewpoint of the University church, the Great St Mary’s Church.
As there is a vast selection of visitor attractions available in Cambridge, it would be virtually impossible to see all of them in a single day. Therefore we advise that you spend a minimum of 2 days in Cambridge. If you are in the process of deciding upon spending a few days in Cambridge it is incredibly important that you book your accommodation at the earliest moment because, unfortunately hotel accommodation in Cambridge tend to be alarmingly busy and are often fully booked months in advance. If your family is large you may find that apartments in Cambridge are a cheaper alternative.
